Gamepad Pinout
The Sega Master System Gamepad uses a standard DB-9 connector. Looking into the gamepad connector, the signals are as follows:
| Pin # | Signal Name | | 1 | UP | | 2 | DOWN | | 3 | LEFT | | 4 | RIGHT | | 5 | +5V | | 6 | TL | | 7 | TH | | 8 | GND | | 9 | TR |
Sega Master System Cartridge PinoutLooking at a cartridge's label side, all odds pins are in the rear 49..1 left to right, and all even pins are in the front 50..2 left to right. The connector used to interface to a cartridge is a standard 50pos 0.100" spacing dual row edge connector for 0.063" thick PCBs. Digikey # A31718-ND is a suitable connector to interface to Master System Carts.
The Sega Master System conveniently provides many Z80 control signals directly on the cartridge port - this is a developer's dream! It's wouldn't be impossible for a cartridge to include a completely separate CPU and have it steal the system's bus. | Pin # | Description | Pin # | Description | | 1 | +5V | 2 | #WR | | 3 | #MREQ | 4 | #RD | | 5 | #M8-B (#EXM1) | 6 | Address 14 | | 7 | Address 13 | 8 | Address 8 | | 9 | Address 9 | 10 | Address 11 | | 11 | #M0-7 (#EXM2) | 12 | Address 10 | | 13 | #CE | 14 | Data 7 | | 15 | Data 6 | 16 | Data 5 | | 17 | Data 4 | 18 | Data 3 | | 19 | GND | 20 | GND | | 21 | GND | 22 | Data 2 | | 23 | Data 1 | 24 | Data 0 | | 25 | Address 0 | 26 | Address 1 | | 27 | Address 2 | 28 | Address 3 | | 29 | Address 4 | 30 | Address 5 | | 31 | Address 6 | 32 | Address 7 | | 33 | Address 12 | 34 | #CONT | | 35 | +5V | 36 | Address 15 | | 37 | #M1 | 38 | #IORQ | | 39 | #RFSH | 40 | #HALT | | 41 | #WAIT | 42 | #INT | | 43 | #KILLGA | 44 | #BUSRQ | | 45 | #BUSAK | 46 | #RST | | 47 | CLK | 48 | #KBSEL | | 49 | #CSRAM | 50 | #NMI |
